Every season has its own unique “flavour” and experience. Every season has its own set of things to do, just as there is a season for planting crops and a season for harvesting them.
Our lives are not too different. Each “season”, or “time period”, brings about the ripening of different karma, and from these karma come different experiences, different life events and different things to do.
When we know which season we are in, we are better placed to do what the season asks of us. To better flow with time.
When the season indicates promotions at work but a lack of romantic relationships, we know where to put our energies, and not be overly stressed when everyone around us seems to be attached except ourselves.
When the season indicates illness and lots of rest, we know it is probably better not to take on that extra project. As for the illness itself, well, knowing that it is the season for illness doesn’t automatically make the illness go away. We still need to take care of ourselves, see the doctor and get medication etc. But at least on the mental and emotional level, there is less bewilderment – “I am perfectly healthy for the past few years but now I am falling sick every month. What’s happening?!?”
At the core, it is about “appropriateness”, doing things that are appropriate for the season that we are in. However, what’s appropriate may not always be that which makes us happy or fulfilled, just as a woman, who is vegetarian, having to eat some meat during pregnancy for the sake of her child.
But knowledge of the season is much less about “twisting” the reality to fit what we prefer, but more of being in balance with what’s required of us, being in balance with what’s happening around us, and within us.
May we all have the wisdom and courage to let go of our preferences and habits, and do what’s required of us in the moment, to be in balance.
