The Sun moves into the sidereal constellation of Leo during the night of 16 August 2024 here in Singapore. I thought it is a suitable time to share a bit about the Sun.

Regularity, rhythm, routine
Of the 9 “planets” that we look at in astrology, the Sun has the most direct and noticeable impact on us. Before we had watches on our wrists or phones in our pocket, our ancestors relied on the Sun to tell the time – when to wake and when to rest, when it is going to be warm (or hot) and when it is going to be cool (or cold). The Sun never fails. It is a constant in our lives. Every day, it rises in the east and sets in the west.
Regularity, rhythm, routine. These qualities are represented by the Sun.
When the Sun is strong in a person’s chart, such being placed in the sign of Leo (its own sign) or Aries (its exaltation sign), having a regular routine and sticking with it is easy for this person.
But when the Sun is weak in Libra, the opposite happens, and the person may have difficulty establishing a routine. He may wake at 7am one day and sleep at 10pm, but the next day he might wake at 10am and go to bed only at 2am. The waking and sleeping times vary from day to day, and as a result, his meal times are also affected. Over time, his health will undoubtedly start to suffer(In his book “12 Rules for Life”, psychologist Jordan Peterson writes about the importance of having a regular waking time to overcome anxiety and depression).

Health and vitality
Therefore, health and vitality are also signified by the Sun.
When the Sun is strong, the regular routines (wake-sleep times, meal times, work-play-exercise times etc.) of the person serve as a bedrock for health, both physical and mental. Any unexpected and/or stressful event that comes along will have a hard time pulling this person out of balance.
Another way to appreciate the Sun’s symbolism of vitality is to consider its role as the giver of life, our primary source of energy. The light of the Sun gives life to plants, and passes from plants to animals, and the warmth of the Sun brings back the return of life after a long winter.

Self-confidence or self-esteem
Among the nine “planets” in astrology, the Sun takes the role of the “king”. Therefore, within us, the Sun represents our “inner authority”, which relates to our self-confidence and self-esteem.
When the Sun is strong, there is a greater sense of self-authority within us, or a greater sense of “kingliness” (or royalty) for the lack of a better word. The way we walk, the way we carry ourselves, our posture etc, all project a sense of confidence to others. A strong Sun gives an aura of leadership, and people naturally gravitate towards you, just like the planets in our solar system are anchored by the gravity of our Sun.
Conversely, when the Sun is weak, it is like a king being teleported to an unknown foreign land. He has no authority there, no recognition, no family, no cabinet of advisors nor subjects to carry out his orders. He doesn’t even speak the language, nor understand the ways of the land.
In order to survive, he can’t behave as he did in his own land. Instead, he has to put himself in a position of humility, to learn the language and to learn a trade or a craft to make an income to get food etc. From knowing everything to knowing nothing, it can be a huge blow to self-confidence and self-esteem. The way this “king” speaks and carries himself will also change.

Boosting self-confidence
There are many wonderful resources available out there that teaches us how to boost our self-confidence. One tip I can offer here is to establish a routine (if you don’t have one already). Sounds simple, but for those with a weak Sun, it can be a challenge.
Confidence comes from an inner belief that, whatever I need to get done, I can do it well.
A pianist has the inner confidence of performing a concerto well because he has practiced that piece countless times – regularly, routinely. Similarly, the long-jump athletes at the recently concluded Olympics have the confidence of jumping a certain distance because they have practiced it countless times – regularly, routinely.
As always, start with something simple, like waking up consistently at a particular time. When that routine is established, we gain confidence that we can establish routines (notice the self-reinforcing loop?). This serves as motivation to build routines for the other areas of our lives to support us.
